The Festival Orchestra brings to life four poignant and provocative works. Peter Shin’s Relapse reflects on the composer’s Korean American upbringing. Carlos Simon’s four-movement work, Tales–A Folklore Symphony, explores African American folklore and Afrofuturism. Andrea Reinkemeyer’s Water Sings Fire is inspired by the feminist origin myth The Little Mermaid. The Tears of Nature, a percussion concerto by Tan Dun, features the stunningly talented Beibei Wang, and explores the sadness of nature’s predicament and the threat to our survival.
