Festival cellist Kathleen Balfe performs an in-person concert at 1440 Multiversity for donors $300+. “Tapestry of Uncertainties” features new works by Spanish women composers, inspired by poetry and written during the pandemic. Ten U.S. premieres by María del Carmen Asenjo-Marrodán, Beatriz Arzamendi, María del Pilar Miralles Castillo, Dolores Serrano Cueto, Diana Pérez Custodio, Consuelo Díez, María José Arenas Martín, Anna Bofill Levi Ana Teruel Medina, and Reyes Oteo. BIO
KATHLEEN BALFE, CELLO
Cellist Kathleen Balfe is a member of the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra and collaborates with the New Century Chamber Orchestra in San Francisco. She has lived and worked in Spain since 2003, when she began her career with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. In 2007 she won the principal cello position with the City of Granada Orchestra, which she still holds today; and in 2018 she became a founding member of the contemporary group Ensemble neoArs Sonora.
With these ensembles, Balfe has had the opportunity to perform at the most renowned festivals and institutions in Spain, such as the CNDM, the Spanish Music Festival of Cadiz, the Canary Islands Music Festival, Musica Músika in Bilbao, the Classical Musical Festival of El Escorial, La Quincena Musical in San Sebastián and the Granada Festival of Music and Dance.
Balfe has appeared with Ensemble neoArs Sonora on Spanish national radio (on RTVE’s “Programa de Mano”) and in 2016 recorded a four-disc project, “Patrimonios Sonoros”, subsidized by the BBVA Foundation and dedicated to Spanish composers. As well, she has recorded albums with various ensembles for Verso, Bis and RCA Records.
